Mexican actor Gael García Bernal will star in the new film by two-time Oscar nominee M. Night Shyamalan. This is Old, a thriller based on a graphic novel that recounts a family vacation on a secluded beach where, for some strange reason, its visitors age rapidly, reducing their entire lives to a single day.
The first preview of this Old movie that is scheduled to hit theaters next July, if the pandemic allows it, was released within the Super Bowl commercials.
Old focuses on a group of people who find a corpse on a beach and gradually realize that something supernatural is happening. The mysterious film stars, in addition to García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Aaron Pierre, Alex Wolff, Vicky Krieps and Abbey Lee.
Among the future projects of the Mexican is also his participation in the series Hombre, Station Eleven, as well as a still untitled project for YouTube and film works of a new version of El Zorro under the direction of Jonás Cuarón and People of the Book by filmmaker Babak Najafi.
For Old, Shyamalan worked on the graphic novel Sandcastle by the French writer Pierre Oscar Lévy, which features illustrations by the Swiss Frederik Peeters. As the director has told in interviews, it was his daughters who introduced him to this story and the premise of what happens to these characters on the beach seemed powerful to him.
The theatrical release of Old was scheduled for this February, but with the studios’ readjustment regarding the pandemic, the film is expected to hit theaters on July 23 by Universal Pictures.
Shyamalan produced the film with Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock. Steven Schneider served as executive producer. This film marks the return of Shyamalan to the big screen after Glass. The filmmaker is also working on the psychological horror series Servant for Apple TV +.
